Last weekend I was browsing eBay just for fun (I love looking at the mid-century furniture that people are selling!).
As I'm going through the furniture, I saw a Herman Miller Classic 0693, designed by George Nelson. Yes, the color and condition wasn't so great, but it was an original 1950's classic, with the Herman Miller tag and all! And the price? $650.00!!
I did a quick search on 1stdibs.com to see if this exact sofa was being sold on there, and for how much. Indeed, there it was, being sold by antique dealer Converso for $9,500.00! See below & click here to see the sofa selling on 1stdibs.com (click the link "Contact Dealer" to see the price)
Sofa on eBay ($650): Sofa on 1stdibs.com ($9,500)
I noticed that people were corresponding with the eBay seller, so I knew I couldn't waste time. read more »
At MOD Restoration, we love working with famous, mid-century designer furniture. We've developed the reputation of being the go-to company for reupholstering mid-century chairs & sofas. Some of our recent work includes Charles + Ray Eames, Hans Wegner, Adrian Pearsall and Milo Baughman.
Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman: We reupholstered this original 1950's chair in a Maharam fabric called Letters for our October 2011 Elle Décor magazine ad. This piece was originally introduced in 1956 for Herman Miller.
Charles + Ray Eames are known for the most classic, iconic designs of the 20th century. In the 1950's, the Eames' pioneered innovative technologies, such as the fiberglass, plastic resin chairs, and wire mesh chairs. The Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman was featured prominently on Frasier; it appears in Dr. Gregory House's office on the hit FOX series House; it was featured in Chandler and Joey's apartment on Friends; it's visible on the cover of Larry King's autobiography Truth Be Told; and it is frequently seen being used in AMC's hit series Mad Men.

One of the most common things we hear from our clients is that they've always wanted to reupholster that one special sofa or chair, but kept postponing the project...for years!! However, they finally decided to go for it after finding MOD -- from Yelp, Groupon and Gilt City -- and couldn't be happier with the result. This is such a huge compliment and we take pride in knowing that our clients now have that perfect chair or sofa in the fabric they've always dreamed of!
Have a look at these before and after shots to see some of the work we've done! read more »
